Getting Started on Managed WordPress at Skystra

Our Managed WordPress service is designed for you to create and launch your online presence, not to manage and be bogged down in administrative boredom. We take care of the entire backend that makes WordPress go, and you take care of your website.

In other words, our platform will handle the process of installing WordPress and also manage your website’s security, backups, speed, scalability and updates!

Installing WordPress on your website – The Easy Way!

On your main client page in NOVA, find your Managed WordPress & domain in the Your Active Services box and click on it:

This will take you to your Manage Services Dashboard where you will click the Access WordPress button:

Now let’s check out how easy it is to work with our Managed WordPress platform and what cool features we have!

To do this, you’ll need to click on the pencil marked below in order to access your Main Control Screen:

Alright, now you’re on the Main Control Screen! It looks like a lot components, but it’s quite straight forward! Just keep reading and you’ll understand everything in a couple of minutes:

The Management section

This is the section where you have all your installation details, backups, themes, plugins and configuration details.

Let’s find out what each has to offer and how easy it is to use them!

Management – Installation Details has all the important information of your website. You should not share this info with anyone except people that you really trust. As you can see, we’ve added in one place your domain name, URL, product name, the WordPress version that’s installed, the site name, the date when you’ve created the website, where your website is located (directory), the name of the database (and its username/password credentials) and some other features too!

Management – Backups is the section where you can create backups of your website. It’s very important to have backups whenever you want to modify your website. Or you can keep evidence of previous versions of your website by creating backups from time to time (some people create backups every day, while others do this once a week / month, this all depends on you and how much you’ll work / modify your website).

To create a backup in Managed WordPress, check out the below steps.

First, click on the “Create Backup” button:

Then, click on what you want to save, choosing from one / all of the below:

  • Backup Directory
  • Backup Data Directory
  • Backup Database

We recommend checking all the above and to leave the backup location as “Default”. But if you want to add a custom location, go ahead and change it into whatever suits your needs! Once you click on the “Create Backup” button, you will receive a notification that says, “The creation of the backup is now in progress”. This can take a few seconds and up to a couple of minutes, depending on how big your website is:

Because we wanted to make things as easy as you can get, we’ve included in the name of the backups the date and hour of when the backup was created. This will help you easily identify the version of your backup if you want to download it, because, yes, you can do this by clicking the first button from right. But this is something you won’t need to worry about as our platform has the “DATE” column that indicates when the backup was created and it’s easier to read it here instead of trying to decipher the naming. You also have displayed the “VERSION” of your WordPress (this is a really useful feature to have when you compare older versions of your website and you need to know if a version performed better than another one).

Another cool and important feature is that you can “Restore” earlier backups by clicking on the “Restore” button as shown in the screenshot below:

This will save you when something bad will happen with your website. If for example, you add a new plugin that will not work as expected and it will also break your website, you can easily restore to a previous working backup! This is why, don’t forget to always periodically create backups of your website.

Management – Themes is where you can manage your themes! This screen offers great control over your  current installed themes, but also lets you search and install new ones.

As you can see, it’s really easy to spot what our current theme is. It’s called “Twenty Nineteen” and it’s “Enabled” (the green part from our screenshot).

You can easily disable it by clicking on the “✓” of another theme and by doing so, you’ll change your theme.

How to add a new theme on your website

It’s easier done than said! Click on “Add New” and search for what you want your website to do.

Let’s say we need a theme that will be used by a photographer. We can search for “photography” and voilà, look at how many themes we can choose from:

This panel was specifically created to be easy to understand, each theme having a small description that explains what the theme offers and a preview to demo the theme. To preview how the theme looks and feels, you just need to click on the image of the theme. You’ll make a better impression by doing so, instead of just installing the theme directly.

To install a new theme, click on the “+” that’s in the right, near rating and version:

For the theme to appear on your website, you will need to enable it, and to do this, just follow the steps that we’ve explained above regarding how to enable / disable themes.

How to install plugins using Managed WordPress

Really fast and simple, with just a few clicks, you can manage your existing plugins or search for new ones!

Managed WordPress – Plugins is the section where you can view your current installed plugins, manage them and install/search for new ones:

As you can see, this is very easy to use. You have the name of the plugin, the version and the status (disabled or enabled).

The same principles as for the themes section applies here too:

  • The “✓” is for enabling a plugin.
  • The “X” mark is for disabling it and the third symbol is to update the plugin.
  • The last icon is for when you want to delete a plugin (you may want to do this when you’ll have too many plugins installed and they will take too much server space or you won’t need them anymore).

Are you ready to start your Ecommerce Store?

Ecommerce is the most popular use of WordPress on our platform. Enhanced greatly by plugins such as WooCommerce, WordPress is a great application to launch an Ecommerce Store. We provide free SSL Encryption so all of your customer data stays safe too.

We’ll discuss below about SSL certificates and you’ve already seen above how easy it is to install a plugin. Now, all you have to do is to search for an Ecommerce plugin, install it and then you can start selling!

Management – Config: The “technical” section of Managed WordPress

In this section you have access to the “hardware” part of your website like the database password and name, authentication keys and a lot of technical stuff.

You can also create your own configs by clicking the “Create Config” button or edit/delete the ones you already have.

With great power comes great responsibility! We recommend to not modify anything in this section unless you know what you are doing.

Changing something in here may result in your website to not work properly. As always, if you have questions on anything, just get in touch with us and we will always help out!

The Actions section

This is the second control panel of our platform. Let’s see what these amazing features have to offer and how they work!

Actions – Control Panel section, once clicked, will take you to your Website’s Dashboard (the main control panel of your website):

Actions – Clear Cache

Cached data is nothing but files, images, scripts and other media files stored on your devices by the website or an app.

Data is stored on your devices in a reserved space, so the next time when you are visiting the app or website, information is already available.

This needs to be cleared if you’ve made changes and you want them to apply / display on your website.

In short, you don’t need to worry about this, simply hit the “Clear Cache” button when you’ve made some changes to your website:

Once you’ve cleared the cache, you can go ahead and refresh your website in order to see the changes that you’ve done.

Actions – Clone is a tool that allows you to clone the WordPress installation from one location to any other domain!

As you can see above, this section is really intuitive to use, and it’s pretty similar with what we’ve done at the beginning of this guide when we’ve installed WordPress. What you have to do it enter a domain, set the relative directory for the new installation and type in the new name of the database to be created for the installation.

Actions – Update, as the names suggests, allows you to update your WordPress version.

To do this, click on the “Update” icon when you want to check for an update.

Actions – Change Domain is to be used when you want to change the domain of your WordPress installation.

As shown below, you can select a new domain and provide a new subdomain with the administrator password.

Actions – Manage Auto Upgrades offers you control over your updates. Remember that at the beginning of this guide we’ve talked about this? The first option, the “Auto Upgrade”, can be turned on if you want us to save your time and always install the latest WordPress version that will be available. The second option will do the same but for all of your plugins and the last option is for the themes that you have installed.

Go ahead and click on all of the above and enjoy your spare time that can now be used in focusing on something better for your business!

Actions – Staging allows you to create a staging link where you can test certain plugins that you want to install, different themes or virtually any changes that you are doing. This is extremely useful and important to have and use because you won’t install anything directly to you live environment (your website), risking to mess something up and force your customers to browser on a broken website.

Your live URL will be https://domain-name.com and your staging URL could look like https://staging.domain-name.com.

The button that’s below the “Staging” option, is for when you want to “Push To Live”, meaning that once you’ve tested a plugin on your staging link, if everything’s ok, you can click the “Push To Live” button to add the plugin to your live URL.

Actions – SSL allows you to enable or disable your SSL certificate.

We provide free SSL Encryption so all of your customer data stays safe too. 

SSL Certificates are small data files that digitally bind a cryptographic key to an organization’s details.

When installed on a web server, it activates the padlock and the https protocol and allows secure connections from a web server to a browser.

You also have the option to create a backup when you disable or enable this feature.

If activated, the backup created now will display in your Management – Backups section.

Actions – Delete offers you the option to delete everything.

You can choose to delete the directory and/or the database with the user along with the installation:
